How to Move Your Store Folder (Outlook Express)

Every new generation of Outlook Express just keeps getting better and better. It seems that the designers of the beloved software listen well to every complaint or suggestion from the public because each time a new Outlook comes on the market it is vastly improved. OE 6 was the first incarnation that allowed you greater control of your store folder, something that many of us have wanted for a long time coming. Today we’ll cover all the bases of transferring files so that you’ll know full well how to move your store folder quickly and easily.

Make a New Folder

Obviously the first step of moving your store folder is creating a new folder in which to put all of your important Outlook files. It is recommended that you name this folder something like “Outlook Folder” or “OE Files” so that you’ll be able to spot it and identify it without any trouble. If you don’t know how to make a folder, simply right click your mouse on your desktop and you’ll see the prompt.

Moving Files

You’ll next want to open Outlook Express and then click on the Tools tab. Here you will see an area called “Options”. The Options section is the prime place to manage your OE files and you should already be well versed in this section because you ought to be backing up your OE data regularly. But either way, you’ll see the Maintenance tab in this section and you’ll want to open it up. Now you’ll be able to access the Store Folder and change the Store Location. You can either type in the folder name that you recently created or you can just browse if you don’t remember its name. Keep in mind, though, that you should copy the data and not simply move it. Also, once you copy the data, don’t delete the original folder just yet. You must make sure that it is backed up and safe before taking the plunge.

Backing Up Data

Now that you’ve got your Outlook Express files in an easier and more accessible location, all that is left is to back up your data to make sure that it is always safeguarded against any possible malfunctions or crashes. You can export your data to any kind of file you choose, so long as you are able to access it again. Also remember to backup your mail and your news folder as well, and anything else that you feel you may want to safeguard against disaster.
