Motherboards: CPU interfaces section updated to cover AMD’s Socket 478, Socket 939 and Intel’s LGA775 forms of processor packaging; Processors: New Processor Numbers section added in light of Intel’s decision to abandon the use of clock speed alone to denote the relative performance and market positioning of its processors, section on Prescott updated to identify the first tranche of desktop CPUs using the new model nomenclature and Roadmap of anticipated processor developments updated accordingly; Non-Intel CPUs: Section on Athlon 64 updated in light of the company’s recent adoption of the new Socket 939 platform for all versions of its successful Athlon 64 processor and Roadmap of future planned processor developments updated accordingly; Mobile Comms: New section added on Galileo, the joint European Union and the European Space Agency initiative to develop a satellite radio navigation system that’s fully compatible and interoperable with GPS and provides a viable platform for the future development of public service, commercial and professional applications.

Interfaces: Sections on PCI and PCI Express updated to reflect the long-awaited emergence of the bus technology that supersedes the AGP interface and will eventually replace the decade-old PCI standard;

Chipsets: New sections added on Intel’s first chipsets to support the new PCI Express interface – the i925X Express chipset and i915 Express chipsets – together with a Comparison chart identifying the major differences between the new chipsets and their Canterwood/Springdale predecessors.

Navigation: The explicit Login link has been removed; Licensed users are now invited to login as and when they seek to access the downloadable Word and HTML versions of the site;

Downloads: Following on from last month’s change to reduce the size of the the online site’s viewable pages, the HTML download has been altered in the other direction – to implement each GUIDE category (e.g. Motherboard) and each discrete TUTORIAL as a single HTML page.

Design: Phased implementation of a new method for accessing information which replaces the somewhat arbitrary grouping of information into increasingly unwieldy viewable pages with a sleeker, more flexible and much faster user interface;

DVD: Sections on DVD-R and DVD+R updated to reflect the current status of the dual-layer versions of the rival DVD-R and DVD+R formats – namely the availability of the latter from the summer of 2004 and the plans for the former to come to market later in the year.

Interfaces: New FireWire 800 section added to cover the 2001 version of the standard which upped the ante in it’s ongoing battle with USB and section on USB 2.0 expanded to cover the USB Implementors Forum’s attempts to clarify the way in which the technology was marketed with its introduction of the new Hi-Speed USB nomenclature;

Mobile Computing: New USB On-The-Go section added, covering the expansion of the USB 2.0 Specification to provide an industry-standard way for handling the interconnectivity between the ever-increasing number of digital electronics devices on the market without the need for them to be connected to a PC.

Processors: Section on Prescott added – following Intel’s release of it’s first Pentium 4 CPU core to be manufactured on a 90 nanometre fabrication technology earlier this year – and Roadmap of planned processor developments updated accordingly.

Inkjet Printers: Section on Photo printers added, outlining the evolution of all-purpose inkjets into devices able to cope with the demands of both the SoHo environment and digital darkroom;

Other Printers: Section on Dye-sublimation updated.

Non-Intel CPUs: Section on Hammer expanded to include a diagram of AMD’s eighth generation microarchitecture, Roadmap updated to reflect AMD’s current desktop processor development plans and new Athlon 64 section added, describing the company’s first and recently launched 64-bit desktop processors.
