FCC Bans Robocalls Using AI to Mislead the Public

Following an incident last month wherein voters in New Hampshire were targeted with robocalls impersonating US President Joe Biden ahead of the state’s presidential primary, significant action has been taken. The calls, estimated to range from 5,000 to 25,000, urged voters to refrain from participating in the primary. New Hampshire’s attorney general has identified two Texas-based companies in connection with the calls and has initiated a criminal investigation.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) highlighted the potential for confusion and misinformation caused by these calls, which mimic public figures and, in some cases, close family members. More Needs to Be Done to Stop Crime Caused by AI Voice Synthesis
The FCC’s action is encouraging. However, it is not enough. A lot of other criminals are using AI to defraud and threaten people. They will be unlikely to abide by the FCC guidance, unless regulators have some teeth to enforce the new policy.
