7 Fun Science Activities for Children

Getting a head start on creating the scientists of tomorrow should happen at a young age. However, even if your kid doesn’t become an astrophysicist, understanding science is a valuable life skill to possess. For parents, engaging in science activities is a fun and constructive way for you to spend time with your child. Why Is It Important to Inculcate Science in Kids?

The better you understand the world, the more tools you have to achieve success in life. Understanding science provides the means through which your child can get on the path to achieving their dreams.

Science also fosters a healthy sense of curiosity in children. It teaches them to examine things in life they are not familiar with safely and productively.

Getting your child to intuitively understand how science works will give them the ability to learn other skills quicker. The concepts of science will transfer over to any other discipline they wish to pursue throughout life.

Information technology allows for the better understanding and presentation of information. While learning scientific concepts, children can gain basic skills that will come in handy in the digital world. Children as young as eight or nine years old can start internalizing basic scientific ideas through activities at home.

1.    Quote Cards

Create a deck of cards with famous quotes that you can explore with your child. Bruce Lee said: “Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup.” Examine this concept using a few containers.

Furthermore, sayings and proverbs make great ideas for this activity. Sayings like “The straw that broke the camel’s back” or “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link” can be the starting point to examine scientific concepts. You won’t be harming any camels, of course, but you can demonstrate the concepts using items readily available at home.

2.    Household Rockstar

Start by filling glasses with varying amounts of water. By tapping on the glasses with a spoon or other object, different pitches will result. String together different notes to create tunes.

Your child should understand that the sound waves moving through the different amounts of water is responsible for the variety in pitch. If you are motivated enough, you can record the tunes you create and even drum out a beat.

By adding different musical aspects each time you play, you can foster an understanding of music as well as the physics of waves.

3.    Plant Project

Plant a seed and follow its growth. You can keep a journal with your child and check in on the plant regularly. You can cover concepts like photosynthesis and nutrients.

4.    Bridge-Building

Use two cups placed upside down on a table and bridge the gap with construction paper or cardboard. Place coins on your bridge to see how many it can hold. Vary the distance between the cups and the material used to bridge the gap.

Fold the paper in different ways to try and increase the number of coins your bridge can hold. You can bring up your activity next time you drive over a bridge. It should make for some interesting conversation material.

5.    Float or Sink

It’s time to play everyone’s favorite game: float or sink! Use a bucket, bathtub or other large container filled with water. Choose a few objects and play float or sink.

You can have your child write down their guesses beforehand. Make it like a game show and be sure to explain why the objects do what they do in the water. They should gain an understanding of buoyancy and density.

6.    Homemade Volcano

Using acids and bases to create a volcano is a common science project that many parents remember from their youths. Recreate your memories while teaching your child about basic chemistry.

7.    Chemistry Delicacies

Use food items to create fun sensations that are education-worthy. For example, a few orange slices and some baking soda can create a bubbling fizzy feeling. Talk about how acids and bases interact.
