408 Request Timeout

408 Request Timeout ErrorThere are many different HTTP Status Code errors you can get while browsing on the Internet.  What the error means is the request you sent to a web server took too long. Therefore, it timed out.  These  pages can be customized by each webmaster and it is not uncommon for large websites to make the effort to tailor them to their business.  Therefore, there is not one canned message that can be shown to cover what you will see. However, here are a few different options you may see.

  • HTTP Error 408 – Request Timeout
  • 408: Request Timeout

This information is included inside the website browser. This will show in the same area you would expect to see any website material. Therefore, it is not a popup or error message that is separate from the browser.

408 Error Causes

As stated earlier the error is caused when the web server takes too long to render the page you requested. This is typically a server side error. It knows the page is there, but it takes too long for the page to load so the server times out.

How to Fix the 408 Error

There are a few different steps you can take to repair the 408 Request TIme out error. Follow these steps below in order to go through proper troubleshooting of the error.

  1. Retry the page you are visiting to see if it will load the second time around. You can do this simply by pressing the F5 button on your keyboard or look for the refresh icon in your web browser. It could just be a slow connection that is causing the error so the second time around it will work just fine. This should be the first thing you should try before performing other troubleshooting steps
  2. If you keep having the error see if you can identify an issue with your own Internet connection. See if you can visit other websites without issues. If you are able to get to other sites, then you can be sure there is nothing wrong with your Internet connection. However, if other websites are giving your problems, then there may be a problem with your connection or your PC. Take it one step further and try another device on the same Internet connection. If you continue to have problems, then there is something wrong with your Internet connection. However, if the second device works fine, then there could be something wrong with the first computer.
  3. If other sites were working fine for you, wait for a bit and visit the site later on. It could be that the site is experiencing a great deal of traffic and may be easily accessible later on.
  4. If you continue having issues reaching the website, then see if you can contact the webmaster and let them know. If you can get to the contact page you can find the information there. Otherwise, many time there is a webmaster email account created. It would be in the format of webmaster@domain.com (replace domain.com with the domain you are trying to reach)

Getting a 408 Timeout Error can be frustrating if it persists. However, hopefully the steps in this article will help you to troubleshoot the error should you encounter it.
