Beginner Guide to UI Design for Websites

Understanding how to make it easy and efficient for a person to interact with a user interface (UI) can be done when you become familiar with the components of UI design. Learning how to build out a UI properly should lead to a logical organization of elements and help convey the appropriate look for a website. When this is done correctly, it can be highly beneficial in keeping a user on a website so that they’ll continue exploring content.

What Is UI Design?

The UI is the graphical layout of a site. It consists of text, images, buttons, text entry fields and any other elements a user might interact with when they’re consuming content. Putting all of these elements together requires an understanding of UI design. Having the right type of knowledge can help provide the basis for the way a website will look when it is released. It includes button shapes, color schemes, fonts and line width. Arranging all of these elements in a specific way helps create a certain look and feel that should be pleasing to a user. It’s essential to have all of the elements create a strong synergy with each other, which creates a feeling of unity in both purpose and aesthetics.

Necessary Components

Having a website become successful is always a top goal when it’s being created. Developing a good design for a UI is an essential step that helps play a crucial role in its success. When content has an aesthetically pleasing UI, it’s usually seen as more usable by its target audience. To help make sure a UI is created correctly, it typically requires a few necessary components. These can help guide a designer and assist in streamlining the process to make it easier to create the right type of elements. These components include the following:

  • Placing a user in control of the UI
  • Making a user comfortable when interacting with a website
  • Creating consistency when making an interface
  • Reducing the cognitive load

Building Out a UI Correctly

Creating an excellent experience for a user and making sure the business goals for a product are being met is a crucial aspect of UI design. Achieving these factors is easier when a designer understands all of the different ways a user can interact with each element. An example of this is the use of buttons, which provide a user with different options. Utilizing specific styles, colors and shapes should help make sure a user finds a button and correctly identifies what it can do if it’s clicked. While this is just one element of an eye-appealing and productive UI, it plays a significant role in overall ease-of-use and aesthetics. The same type of understanding should be used for every element to help build out a UI correctly.

Understanding the Benefits

Making the right decisions with the design of a UI can help clarify the functionality of a site and make it easier for users to navigate. Providing a target audience with an efficient way to find what they’re looking for is always the end goal. With the high number of mobile devices being used today, having a beautiful, intuitive UI should help enhance the experience for a user and make them want to continue exploring. Engaging with a website should be a pleasure for a user. Simplifying the process by having a purpose for each element helps make it more efficient for them to navigate.

You can likely see why it’s helpful to have a well-thought-out UI. Doing so should aid in boosting retention and finding the solutions a user needs.
