Best DNS Providers of 2021 (Part 2)

We previously talked about some of the best DNS providers of 2021. We started with an introduction to the topic, but we decided to have a more in-depth discussion and cover some more.

Google DNS

Created at the end of 2009, it is focused on the most inexperienced users, and offers all the explanations in its online documentation. It is not as private as Cloudflare’s, as it stores anonymized browsing data to assist in troubleshooting and diagnostics, but at least it promises to delete your IP after 24 or 48 hours from its servers.

It is one of the fastest DNS on the network, and although it does not have filters to configure your browsing like OpenDNS, it does offer protection against some attacks such as DNS cache poisoning or DoS attacks. The only downside is the simple fact that it is Google who controls your browsing, and the eternal suspicion that it may use the data for more than it claims.

We are therefore faced with an easy, convenient and totally free alternative for those who want to replace their operator’s DNS with one that prioritizes speed and protection against a common type of attack. Perhaps the only thing missing are some of the extra options and filters offered by other DNS.

Cloudflare

Another simple DNS for users who are satisfied with the basics, but that tries to compete with Google’s by attacking where it hurts the most. First attacking its great advantage by offering the highest speed in the industry according to some benchmarks, and then to the eternal suspicions that hover over the search engine company by offering absolute privacy.

Cloudflare promises that it will not use your data to serve advertising, that it will **never write to any hard drive your IP, and that any logs generated by your use of its network will be deleted after 24 hours. In addition, it hires external audits for public reporting to confirm compliance with all of its privacy-related promises.

Otherwise, it is a service without any extra features such as blocking filters or monitoring of your browsing. Neither do they add security extras, nor anti-phishing, nor content blockers. Simply speed and privacy.

Primary and secondary DNS 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1

Comodo Secure DNS

The Comodo company specializes in security products, and also offers a free DNS to help you with your browsing. We can’t say that they are going to surprise you with their speed, but they have preferred to focus on offering the maximum possible security options to help you surf more peacefully.

Not only do they block phishing pages, but they also warn you when you visit a page with malware, spyware and pages with excessive ads. It also offers its extra security solution Dome Shield, which in its free version offers blocking of malicious IP requests, against more types of advanced threats and customizable page blocking, and also offers paid versions with even more settings.

Therefore, this is a service in which security takes precedence over speed, and where you will find multiple options for safer browsing and blocking pages that may be dangerous.

Primary and secondary DNS 8.26.56.26 and 8.20.247.20

Quad9

Active since 2016, even being almost a newcomer this alternative has managed to position itself as an alternative to take into account if you are looking for security. Quad9 boasts the support of more than 18 threat intelligence providers to be able to be more effective in defending you, although of course, the quantity in this aspect is not always so important.

In terms of performance, it doesn’t reach the speeds of alternatives such as Cloudflare or OpenDNS, but it is still well positioned and above average, outperforming other members of the list such as Comodo. It offers security extras such as protection against online threats, default blocking of malicious domains, and whitelisting methods to ensure that secure websites are accessible.

In short, it is a DNS that is trying to position itself as an alternative for those seeking security, but who want to maintain a good balance in terms of browsing speed and privacy. In this aspect they promise to respect your privacy, although they keep some logs for internal use. It is also completely free, although it lacks the configuration options for security that other more established DNS have.

Primary and secondary DNS 9.9.9.9.9 and 149.112.112.112.112

Verisign DNS

Founded in 1995, this is a company that offers different types of services, including some security services. Its performance and speed are not its strong point, especially when compared to other members of the list, but in return it promises you a stable experience, and good security and privacy.
