The Virtual Olympics: What Games Will Be Played In The Coming Years?

Gaming is a huge and diverse market. There is the hugely popular online casino market, in addition to mobile, console, and PC. There are well-established esports titles across the globe, all of which have organised leagues and events spanning the vast space, culminating in World Cups or their equivalents. They attract tens of thousands – with some, like League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, reaching hundreds of thousands –  of people to watch their action. There is a considerable infrastructure for global representation and competition already, with many stars

As a recognized sport, until now it has been watched by masses of spectators and the program has an exciting lineup of all its disciplines. We take a look at some of these below.

The 5 Disciplines

Even though the detailed program was not released until nearer to the dates, the decision of including the eSports disciplines themselves as well as the awards being given have been discussed for now and future endeavours and the committee has decided to divide the event into 5 main disciplines based on the relationship of their values that need to coincide with the Tokyo Olympic Games.

They have been divided into the following:

  1. Motorsport: FIA/Grand Tourism : teaming up with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), will be the popular game GTA or Gran Tourismo.
  2. Baseball: Konami, is teaming up with the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) to bring us their eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 video game.
  3. Cycling: Zwift and union Cyclist Internationale (UCI) has joined hands to create a cycling training app.
  4. Rowing: This will be an open format and does not have an official name attached to it.
  5. Sailing: Virtual Regatta is teaming up with World Sailing on both online and mobile racing simulators.

The IOC International Olympic Committee

The IOC has stated that it would like to prioritise this inclusivity into the Olympic games from now on and participants can compete digitally either from training facilities or their homes.

For the 2021 one that just finished, just like the original Olympics game, there was a grand finale showcased over a 10.5 hour broadcast from all types of thrilling and exciting sports of Motorcross to baseball and sailing finalists. From Playstation 4 tournament finals where winners such as Tokyo’s SHORA Mori to home run derby played on Nintendo Switch), the results were just as good as the real thing.

The difference between all 5 disciplines was determined in terms of how the games will be played as well as how participants can take part in them. More information about this will be released as the days go by but for now, judging by the way it has been going since May 13th, everything seems to be taking shape brilliantly for everyone!

The 2021 Olympic Virtual Series (OSV), had been officially launched by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and, for the first time, eSports competitions were held at the Summer Olympics from May to June of this year. Now that the eSports industry has embraced the idea of joining the Olympics, many spectators are wondering which games they will be spectating.
