Major Technology Trends for the New Year (Part 1)

The science fiction films of the last century imagined 2020 as a very distant future in which all kinds of unthinkable technologies would prevail. Spaceships or flying cars? Everything was possible from the distance of those times.

Today we have seen how technology has taken over many processes in our lives, but there is still some room for the human. In 2020, we will witness an even greater boom and development of technological advances; to view more visit www.Facebook.com/BossLasers. We review some of the ones that are going to be most prominent.

1.- 5G for all

Although in Europe, Vodafone is currently the only operator that offers the service, and it does not do so throughout the territory nor are many brands that have terminals prepared for the use of this technology, everything points to the fact that this will change throughout the year.
The popularization of 5G is growing slowly, especially since the flagship devices of manufacturers such as Samsung, Google and Apple are still only 4G. But according to the latest leaks that will change in 2020 with the Samsung Galaxy S20, Pixel 5 and iPhone 12.

The main advantages of 5G, as we have already mentioned on other occasions, are higher data transfer speed, higher bandwidth, improved latency, more devices connected to the network simultaneously and much lower power consumption.

2.- The disruption of flexible screens

If until recently the trend seemed to be that the bigger the device, the better, perhaps 2020 will mark the end of that – uncomfortable – fashion: mobile phones and folding tablets are here, now we will have to see if they are here to stay or are just a passing fancy – and at the moment very expensive. How do they make a mobile phone bend? By taking advantage of the capabilities of OLED type screens.

Samsung kicked off flexible smartphones with the Galaxy Fold. Soon after, Huawei launched the Mate X, and we also saw the introduction of the Motorola razr, the company’s classic ‘shell phone’ reinvented. LG also has a dual screen model, although the concept is somewhat different and it is an accessory for the device -LG V50 ThinQ 5G has an external screen that connects like a case.

These have been the main devices presented in 2019, in addition to other somewhat Martian launches such as the Escobar Fold 1, a folding Android smartphone developed by Roberto Escobar himself, the older brother of the famous Colombian drug dealer Pablo Escobar. Foldable tablets have also appeared such as Microsoft’s Surface Neo, followed by others from manufacturers such as Dell, ASUS and Lenovo.

3.- Will virtual reality finally prevail?

It seemed to be the invention of the millennium and yet it has not finished fitting in. In addition, a twin has appeared on the road to virtual reality (VR): augmented reality or AR, which instead of transporting the user to a ‘parallel world’ like VR adds virtual objects to the real world.

Perhaps because of the ‘ease’ of implementing RA, it is being exploited more and used in the service sector -for example to guide you in an airport-, as a business tool -for example to develop an architectural project- or in the academic world -for example in an anatomy class-. Companies like Apple (ARCore), Google (ARkit) or Amazon (ARView) have optimized their augmented reality platforms and integrated them into their services, however VR seems to have been relegated to the world of gaming.
