Graphics: Sections on DirectX, Direct3D and OpenGL updated in light of the latest releases of the respective APIs, sections on Talisman and Fahrenheit updated following the eventual demise of each of the initiatives and new sections added on SLI technology and CrossFire, the dual PCIe 3D graphics cards technologies from rival graphics chipmakers Nvidia and ATI.

Chipsets: New sections added on Intel’s 945 Express and 955X Express chipsets, released in the spring of 2005 in support its Pentium D and Pentium 4 Extreme Edition dual-core processors, respectively, with associated Comparison chart updated accordingly;

Non-Intel CPUs: New section added on AMD’s Athlon 64 X2 processor, pipped at the post by Intel’s Pentium D as the first dual-core desktop CPU to market, but appearing to have the edge on its rival both in terms of performance and compatibility;

Mobile Computing: New Sonoma section added, outlining the technology behind the second-generation of Intel’s mobile Centrino platform, introduced at the start of 2005.

Motherboards: New BTX section added, outlining Intel’s successor to the ageing ATX form factor designed to meet the increasing thermal, power, structural, acoustic and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements of today’s PC system builders;

Non-Intel CPUs: New Barton and Sempron sections added, covering the final incarnation of the Athlon XP CPU family and the new family of processors (which together with the Athlon 64) form the basis of AMD’s current processor ranges, with the Roadmap of future planned desktop processor developments updated accordingly;

Mobile Computing: Section on Crusoe updated in light of Transmeta’s decision, in January 2005, to suspend production of its low-drain processors and focus on licensing it technology in future;

Projectors: Section on LCOS technology updated in light of Intel’s and Philips’ decisions, in late 2004, to cease their associated development and production efforts;

Mobile Comms: New WiMAX section added, outlining the IEEE 802.16-based technology which it is hoped will standardise and promote wireless broadband as an alternative to digital subscriber line and cable and help remove existing barriers to broadband access.
