Motherboard Audio

Finally, some motherboards provide a pin header that allows connection to a front-mounted audio connector, designed to support stereo audio output (headphone or amplified speakers) and a monochrome microphone input.

The Intel Front Panel Connectivity Guide recommends the following design for front-mounted audio connectors. If your motherboard is a recent design, it’s likely it will be identical, or at least similar.

6 AUD_RET_R Right Channel Audio signal Return from Front Panel
7 HP_ON Reserved for future use to control Headphone Amplifier
8 KEY No Pin
9 AUD_FPOUT_L Left Channel Audio signal to Front Panel
10 AUD_RET_L Left Channel Audio signal Return from Front Panel
