Wrong hard disc capacity

Hello, I have just upgraded (from Win98), and installed Windows XP SP2 on my pc. Installation was successful and evrything is working well, except my second hard drive (D), is showing the wrong capacity.
It is a 120 GB disc, but when I click on Properties, it shows: Unused space: 65.4 MB and Free space: 31.4 GB, and Capacity 31.4 GB
I have tried formatting via Right click MY Computer-Manage/Computer Management/Disk Management. Also, have tried going into CMOS and Auto Detection. No difference. What has happened to the remaining space?
ANY help would be greatly appreciated, to get back the right capacity.
Thank you

I forgot to mention that I formatted in NTFS, as I am aware of the 32GB limitation with the FAT32 system.

Hi michelle. Have you run scandisk on the drive? It might fix it, or tell you if there's damaged surface area on the disk. If you run this and nothing changes, post back and I'll go through some other steps.

I don't know what happened to the postings by KenB, but the jumper setting has not fixed the problem. I took the jumper from the "Limit drive" position, and placed it in "Drive as Slave". Powered off, rebooted: Drive not detected.
Changed the jumper to "Cable Select"...... Powered off, rebooted: "Detecting IDE Primary Slave: None"
I had this problem originally when I installed the drive, but everything was OK with the jumper in the "Limit Drive" setting. Under Win 98, the slave drive showed the correct capacity (120 GB). Under Win XP SP2, drive capacity was 31.4 BG. Drive is Seagate Barracuda 7200; 120 GB
Thanks Nowpc....I shall try running scandisk, and let you know

Hi nowpc, How do I run scandisk?? The only way I can get my pc to detect the second drive (ie slave drive), is to have the jumper on "Limit Drive" sertting.
If I then run scandisk, it will only scan its capacity of 31.4 GB.

"I don't know what happened to the postings by KenB"
I don't either, but we've just transferred the domain to a new server. I closed the forums down in order to prevent new posts etc being lost, but possibly that's the reason.
KenB, if you see this please let me know (neil@pctechguide.com)
"How do I run scandisk??" Take a look at this hard disk maintenance tutorial.
Setting up your IDE cable has to be a certain way. Just to be clear:- Set your main drive's jumpers to master.
- Set your secondary drive's jumpers to slave.
- If you have an 80 wire IDE cable, the master drive goes on the end connector, the slave in the middle.
- If you have a 40 wire cable (unlikely), the drives are configured the other way around - master end, slave middle.
- If you configure both drives as "cable select", the drive positioning is even more important.
Does this help?

KenB spoke about changing the jumper position. But that didn't help.
I am not at home presently...having a break for one week at my girlfriends place, interstate.
I didn't know about the reverse configuration for 40 wire cables. My system was purchased July 1998, so this could possibly be the problem. At the moment, the drives are configured according to your 80 wire description.
If this fails, I will run the Chkdsk.exe utility on the hard drive. But will this utility actually scan the whole disk (120 GB) or just the 31.4 GB?
I shall let you know how I go. Thanks

Chkdsk will only run on what the operating system sees - it won't "find" the missing 90Gb. The drive has to be seen by BIOS (the basic computer) to be seen by the operating system.
If the system is that old, I'm surprised it ever recognised the drive. But if it did once, it will again - just get those jumpers and cables right!

Hi again nowpc, Run Chkdsk: no errors My cable is a 40 wire.
I have tried the jumpers (on the second drive) all ways: Tried as "Cable Select" Tried as ""Drive as Slave"
I also tried changing the jumpers on the master, each with the 2 positions as above for the slave drive.
Even tried changing (in desperation) the plugs of the cable to the drives ie middle plug to master, end plug to slave.
Nothing...no success. I have spent 3 hours trying every combination and permutation!!! The only way the slave drive is detected is in the "Limit drive" position.
Interesting to note that the position of the plugs of the cable into the drives, did not make a difference when the jumper was in the "Limit drive" position, but in both cases, the slave registered 31.4 GB
A friend suggested that the BIOS is set to 32GB limit, but could not tell me how to check or right this. Is this possible. If so, how do I correct it.
Maybe this is one of those anomalies with my computer and I should give up!!

Hi Niel, Sorry I cannot see your last answer. Anyway, I tried your last suggestion, but the drive made a horrible noise (couldn't tell which one it was as they are close together, but I assume it was the slave). Sounded like the old impact printers printing very fast.
Also, I want to apologise for that KenB posting. KenB is from another forum, and I confounded the two forums. Very sorry about that.
