Hi all,
I'm new to the site and have a question for all you clever people. I have a desktop pc and a wireless laptop, they are both xp. The desktop is connected to the internet through a netgear wireless router. I have run the network wizard to enable both to share folders, but it gets to the bit which says I have to create a network disc on a floppy and run it on the other computer too, the only problem is that the laptop does not have a floppy disk drive. I have set both to share the c-drive, but neither computer can see each other.
Any help would be gratefully received, i'm not too technical, so bear with me if I don't understand much!
Cheers
Liz

Clever? Pah, I for one get by on dull smartass. ;\)

You need to set the same details on both computers when you go through the network setup wizard. Don't let the wizard set the network key automatically - set it yourself. Then, set the same key to the other computer.

Hi, I don't get asked for a network key? I get to the bit that asks if I want to create a disk, use xp cd etc. My only option is to create a disk, but I don't have a floppy drive on my laptop so that is no use - any ideas?

Sorry, I was thinking about wireless networks...! Ok, just ignore the disk making thing (cancel it away) and run the wizard on the other computers. As long as you give the same workgroup name on each computer that you run the wizard on, everything should be fine.

Thank you so much, I finally figured that it was my firewall that was blocking it, so I uninstalled, pinged and hey presto I have shared files. Now just have to install the firewall again and hope it still works

Ah, I should have thought of that! When you reinstall your firewall, go into the settings to allow the IP addresses of your home network to talk to each other. You'll have to do this on all your computers. If you need help with this, post the name of the firewall software that you're using. \:\)

Hi, sorry another question, how do I set a password for my shared files, so that no one from outside can access them?

Well, the only way that people "outside" can access your files is if they log on to your network. If it's a wired network, then that's pretty difficult! But if it's a wireless network, then you need to make sure you have security in the form of WEP or WPA encryption enabled on your access point. That should keep the snoopers out.

Once in to your network, security for sharing files and folders is another step. If you have XP Pro, and your disk is formatted with NTFS, you can set some quite specific access rights for files and folders, including limiting to certain user log-ins with ID and password.

Thanks for that, I only have XP home, I have looked into the help section but can't see anything, but will check that i've sorted everything on the wireless router, I only got it a month ago so i'm still reeling from configuring that!!!
