I recently built my new computer. this is the first computer i put together. the power turns on fine and everything. however, when i went to install the operating system - the dvd drive i installed does not open - which makes it pretty impossible to install the OS. I can not figure out why it wont open. all parts of the computer are new - except the dvd drive, which i got from my old computer so i know it works. the only things i can think of is that somehow the connection to the motherboard is impaired or something to do with the harddrive which is OEM. but im pretty sure it's connected properly. it's connected to the power and to the MB with an ide cable. the harddrive is connected to the MB with a sata cable. anyone have any ideas?

Things to check:
- IDE cable connections
- try swapping the DVD between the primary and secondary ports
- try another IDE socket on the motherboard (if there is one)
- check DVD drive jumpers
- Check for correct BIOS settings for the IDE port

I doubt the problem is related to an OEM hard drive, especially since the HDD is not even sharing the IDE port, but I guess you could try disconnecting the HDD and see if it makes any difference (I'm assuming the HDD is not yet formatted or in use).

Good luck - let us know what happens.

IDE ports can support two IDE devices on a single daisy-chained cable, i.e. a ribbon cable with three connectors, one for the IDE port and two others for the IDE devices. To support two IDE devices the IDE controller has to be able to 'address' the IDE devices individually, so one device will be the 'primary' device and the other will be the 'secondary' device.

If two 'primary' devices are connected to the same IDE port then neither will work, so you need to ensure they are correctly configured. This is typically done using jumpers on the IDE drive, usually a 4x2 block of pins near the main IDE cable connector. The drive installation manual should describe the process, or sometimes there is a little diagram on the device itself.

The motherboard manual should describe how to configure the various BIOS settings. Normally you press a function key to enter the BIOS during booting, typically F2 or F10.

However, if you are not getting anything on your monitor screen when you switch on then you have to fix this first.

Check your motherboard manual; there should be a description of what to do the first time you switch on. There might also be a 'trouble shooting' section. There may be some diagnostic LEDs on the motherboard and/or it may issue a sequence of 'beeps' that can sometimes be used to indicate what's happening.

manual doesn't help at this point. i heard no beeps just the sound of it turning on.. which wasn't a beep - more of a hum from the fans or w/e. since monitor wont turn on i was wondering if it was the video card but the fans on the card work. also since the monitor and dvd both dont work i fee as if its the motherboad but why... its brand new . is there a way to test the mobo see if it works?

"is there a way to test the mobo see if it works"
The plain answer is not really. The long answer starts with yes, needs another mobo and/or decent diagnostic software and/or other bits of gear... and goes on from there.

"the dvd drive i installed does not open"
You mean the drawer doesn't open? Is the power cable plugged in? Do any LED lights on the front of the drive come on?

the the drawer doesn't open. i dont see any lights but there also isn't even a spot on the front of the dvd drive for a light... so... however, i did try hooking up a cd drive in which yes there was a light - but it still wouldnt open.

i feel like the mobo is messed up cuz 1) dvd drive 2) monitor and now 3) i hooked up my keyboard to see if caps lock/numb lock comes on - which it doesn't. i dont know how i could have messed it up tho.. what a waste of money if thats teh case.

on the front panel on the mobo there is LED_pwr, pwr, reset, and hdd.. now i have 3 little connectors - pwr, reset, and hd.. all of which a re pluged in. so this leaves the LED_pwr w/ nothing plugged in it - a 3 pin. so what is ledpwr used for?

also i have a 1394 plug in my case which is not plugged in anywhere cuz i could find where to plug it - the only spot it fits would be in a usb port. so what is this for and do i need it?

"i did try hooking up a cd drive in which yes there was a light - but it still wouldnt open"
So with two separate components, a CD drive and a DVD drive, with the power cable correctly inserted on each item, at power up neither one's drawer would open? Hmm. It's at least possible that both devices have a fault, but it's unusual. If you connect the power to an optical device and DON'T connect the IDE cable, you should still be able to open the drawer when you power up the system.

Individual cases have differing leads that can be connected to the mobo's pins. Commonly there is a power switch, a standby, a power LED, and a hard drive usage LED. There may be others. The LEDpwr is the connection for lighting the LED on the case when the power is switched on. Refer to your motherboard manual to ensure you have these pins properly connected - or look at the PCTechGuide motherboard tutorial.

well i know for a fact both drives are fine since i took them from my old computer. and im pretty sure the pins are connected correctly. so.. if the drives should still open w/o the ide... that means there's something wrong w/ the power to them, no?

The power supply cable will only fit one way, and the IDE cable should have the red strip nearest to the side that the power cable is connected. If that's all ok, then I guess the power cable may be at fault. You'll have two IDE strands coming from your PSU - have you tried using the other one? Are the drives being identified in the BIOS boot-up?
