I have a BT 1800HG router connected to my main PC via ethernet I also connect 2 laptops via wifi one with built in wifi and one with a plug and play card then there is my xbox 360 which I have the official usb wireless adapter for. Now the problem is this I havent been able to connect using the laptops for a while, my 360 will connect, the other day I turned off the main PC for which I have had no problems and went to the 360 when i signed in it would not connect to live however after an hour and half it did. My hub manager software is showing the laptops as both being currently active

what is going on

Hi, sieg, welcome to the PCTechGuide forums! First of all, do you have WEP or WPA enabled on your WiFi network, and if so have you checked that the keys are correct? Secondly, can you see the network, or the Internet, or neither from the laptops?

Ok, then we know it's a local network issue. If you have XP on all the machines and use XP for configuring the network sometimes the easiest thing to do is to rerun the wireless network setup wizard. It's worth a try.

If that doesn't work have you tried pinging between computers on your network? If you're getting time-outs on the pings, then it's possibly a firewall problem. If you get responses, it's likely a configuration problem with your router.

I havent used xp to set up the network. just used the router software from my broadband provider and the plug and play software as this seemed a much simpler way to set up the network

Need a bit more info, then!
From one of your laptops, go start->run and type cmd, hit enter. Type ipconfig, see what comes up, and report it back.
Did you try pinging another computer on the network? To do it, get the IP address of a computer using ipconfig, then from another computer open up a cmd window and type "ping PC" where PC is the ip address of the first computer. If you get time outs then I'd suspect maybe a firewall issue.

on the laptop with built in wifi i get the following ipconfig
windows ip configuration
ethernet adapter wireless network connection 2 :
media state .......:media disconected
ethernet adapter local area connection
media state........:media disconected
I cant actually see an ip address here but the above^^^^ is probably why
On the laptop with plaug and play card i just get:
ethernet adapter wireless network connection
media state........:media disconected
(again no ip address)
These ip searches were preformed while the wireles functions were active in both laptops and the laptops can see the networks of my neighbours house but does not see mine whilst right next to it

Hi sieg - sorry for the delay in replying! I think we have to try and go back to the beginning here. When you switch on your modem, do the lights come on? Do they stay lit? Can you log on to your modem - often at http://192.168.0.1 but there are other possibilities, check your documentation. Have you changed any security settings in your router, particularly MAC address filtering? Do you have a firewall in place? If so, you might want to risk disabling it temporarily and seeing if you can connect then. Whether or not you can, enable it again immediately.

What do you mean they can "see" your neighbor's network? Can you associate to it?
