No sound using Linux Fedora Core 4 on Equium A60

I'm hoping a Linux expert can help me out here. Recently I've started using Linux on my laptop, and everything is really pretty great, except that I have no sound. Originally, I installed Fedora Core 3, and had no sound, then I did a yum upgrade, and lo! I had sound. Great!
After a time, though, I upgraded to Fedora Core 4, mostly out of curiosity, and now the sound has gone again, and I can't get it back.
My Toshiba laptop uses AC'97 sound, and the Fedora "sound card" detect does actually find the right card, but I can't hear the sample sound. The sound is definitely NOT muted, as I've used alsa-mixer but to on avail. Now, obviously sound isn't a great priority, but I'd rather have it working. Besides, I'm curious, so, if anyone can help me out, I'd be really grateful!

Hey Neil. Hope life is treating you well.
I'll try and help with what I remember. I had lots of issues converting my old laptop from OSS to ALSA (the newer and preffered sound architecture) , but I've been pretty lucky in having all my recent installs just work by default so my memory is a little rusty. I'm assuming Fedora 4 was a fresh install and not an upgrade from a system using OSS (which is not unworkable but adds some extra things to look out for)
You say you have run amixer and checked the levels, thats typically the first thing to try. Making sure all the right kernel modules are loaded is probably the biggest cause of problems, so I'll have to ask for a little more info. Also, ALSA has "OSS emulation" modules to make software written for OSS work. You will need these to run some apps but they are typically set up by default.
First, have you tried running alsaconf (as root from the command line of course)? Its pretty good at detecting your card and setting up modprobe. AC97 is very common so it should be an easy one to set up. IN most cases this should be all thats needed.
What entries do you have for snd in your /etc/modules.conf file? Can you post the output of lsmod here? You might also want to check for any suspicious looking errors in /var/log/messages and /var/log/dmesg
Its sometimes hard to diagnose these things on message board threads. You can post here or you have my email. Might take a few exchanges to hit on the right thing but I'm sure its something easy to fix.
Here are a couple links I just looked at for a quick memory refresh...

Hi Blair! Brilliant of you to get back to me! I had a feeling that huge listings of text might be necessary to help diagnose this.... isn't that the Linux way? If it moves, log it! LOL ... uh, and a good thing too, of course. But sorry this makes for such a long post, I hope you have a cup of tea ready before you start through it!!
Ok, first off, I don't seem to have "alsaconf" on the system. There's a utility in the Fedora menu: Desktop->System Settings->Soundcard Detection. When I run this, it identifies my sound card as ATI Technologies Inc IXP150 AC'97 Audio Controller, using module sndatiixp. There's a "Play Test Sound" button, but nothing happens, and when I tell it I didn't hear anything it tells me I should review scsound.log. Recently I did this and I found in there that I got the error audio open error: Device or resource busy, and somewhere else there was a line that suggested try using pci=routeirq. So, I've added that to the boot line, and those errors have now gone, BUT I still don't have sound. If it helps, I can take that line out of the boot, and post what scsound USED to say, but here's the (slightly edited) contents of scsound.log now: ------- System Config Soundcard -------- Tue Apr 25 08:16:07 BST 2006

I don't have a /etc/modules.conf file. There's a /etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/ folder in which there's the files mapping-modules.conf, ssl-modules.conf and default-modules.conf, but I'm pretty certain that none of their content has anything to do with the sound card.
Now for some of the dmesg highlights ( ): ATI board detected. Disabling timer routing over 8254. When booting, I always get the message "MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC." I didn't get this when I was using Core 3, and the sound worked on Core 3. However, the system works fine other than the sound, so I assume it's finding a workaround to this issue. Here's the first mention of ATIIXP: ATIIXP: IDE controller at PCI slot 0000:00:14.1 ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:14.1[A] -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 17 ATIIXP: chipset revision 0 ATIIXP: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later ide0: BM-DMA at 0x8070-0x8077, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio ide1: BM-DMA at 0x8078-0x807f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:pio It's mentioned again a while later here: ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:14.5[B] -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 18 atiixp: codec reset timeout And finally there's these two lines, right at the end: application mixer_applet2 uses obsolete OSS audio interface application firefox-bin uses obsolete OSS audio interface Which is something that you mentioned.
And I guess I'd really better leave it at that for now..! I know there's an awful lot of stuff here, so I can be patient waiting for a reply - just thanks a milllion for your time.

Hey again Neil.
Yes, lots of info there. The only AC97 based machines I've seen used the intel810 sound modules, so the atixp is new to me but appears to be right for your machine. What model laptop is it exactly? (there are some good dedicated linux-on-laptop sites that may have useful info).
Looking through the modules it looks like all the dependencies are fullfilled, and the OSS compatibility seems to be there. You mentioned that you had compiled a kernel with sound support built in - is this the running kernel? I'd suggest always compiling everything as modules unless you know you need something (like firewalling or routing) built in.
Not sure why you have no alsaconf. It might be outside of root's path (some distros don't include /sbin/ in the path for instance). Maybe try "find" to be sure.
The "atiixp: codec reset timeout" is a potential issue. I'll ask some of my colleagues what they think about that.
I assume you have tried various different audio player software and played around with the mixer (eg speakers with headphones muted and vice versa).
Since you are comfotable doing a kernel compile, it may in the end be faster for you to just install the latest ALSA software from source - package systems like up2date, yum, and apt are great for keeping the OS up to date but sometimes its just easier/more flexible to manually compile/update some things from source.........
I'll post again in a day or two with anything else that comes to mind...
Remember - the more annoying the problem, the more satisfying it is when you go "AHAH!".
Or not :-)

Hi! Yes, I've seen the intel810 modules noted in relation to the AC'97, and wondered if there was some way to force the kernel to attempt to use those drivers, just as an experiment?
The kernel that I compiled is just sitting around doing nothing now. The only difference I made to the Fedora 4 default configuration is that I changed the AC97 drivers from module to compiled status, as I'd read somewhere that this might help. No joy though, so I'm back to using the Fedora 4 kernel.
I've run searches as root using locate and find for alsaconf, and it doesn't show up. New alsa version? Fedora specific version???
I've tried the different media players I can find, and also installed mplayer which seems to be the recommended non-standard media player. I've switched between the GNOME and KDE desktops as I read somewhere that K-MIX (I think that's what it was called) can sometimes be muted in KDE and that means even GNOME won't have sound. Well, I couldn't find K-MIX (!!) but I checked KDE settings and all was turned on and turned up.
I was thinking about doing the ALSA install from source, but here's my big fear: getting into some fabled "dependency issue" nightmare scenario! Currently, I just run YUM and I don't really have to give a monkeys about dependencies because it just sorts them out. If I installed ALSA from source, though, wouldn't I have to recompile it every time I updated a media player, or any other application that used it? YUM wouldn't update it any more, would it? Or am I just scared of the unknown, and really it's not all that bad??
Thanks for all the help Blair! LOL I'm really looking forward to that AHAH! moment , but as Dr Frankenfurter would tell us it's good to live in antici...... pation sometimes!

You could build them and try to insmod, but its certain to fail.
No joy though, so I'm back to using the Fedora 4 kernel.
That will make troubleshooting easier in the end.
I've run searches as root using locate and find for alsaconf, and it doesn't show up. New alsa version? Fedora specific version???
Just did a quick Google and it seems that Fedora has left it out on purpose in favor of soundcard-config.
I was thinking about doing the ALSA install from source, but here's my big fear: getting into some fabled "dependency issue" nightmare scenario!
It happens sometimes, but I would bet money the ALSA sources will build without any issues on your machine. If you can compile a kernel you likely have all the dev tools and libraries you need.
If I installed ALSA from source, though, wouldn't I have to recompile it every time I updated a media player, or any other application that used it?
No, but you might have to every time you upgraded a kernel. I admit its not ideal, but its not hard to do either. Here is a quick overview which looks pretty good.

Thanks for all the help Blair! LOL I'm really looking forward to that AHAH! moment
Sorry I have not been of much help. You might consider posting to the fedora forum
http://fedoraforum.org/
or mailing list
http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list
Not that I'm trying to conceed defeat, but there is a lot more knowledge than I have willing and able to help, might as well use it.

Hi Blair! That's great, thanks. I've had a good read through the links you've provided, and gone back again through the ALSA site, and it does look very much like the Bruce Shankle's site has the thing tied down. So, I'll have a go with his procedure as soon as I get a chance, hopefully over this weekend, and I'll let you know how it goes!

Ptooey. No joy, but then again I didn't get very far with my experiment... here's why.
I figured I'd have a go at this last night whilst the interminable Ebdon/Dott world snooker final was on TV. (Nobody is going to tell me that was a classic final. It was barely watchable as a sporting event... but I digress.) So, I downloaded everything I needed, spent half an hour reading round, double checking conf this and log that, and felt ready to go.
Now, I knew that ALSA was already installed on my system as an RPM, but I thought no problem, just rpm -e | grep alsa, which I did, and the ALSA utilities rpm was removed. Then it came to the ALSA libraries... and I got about 3 pages of dependency failures ranging from "FreeCiv" to the kernel.
In a fit of pique I hurled my laptop at the TV, taking out both it and the miserable display of inept snooker playing in a satisfying shower of sparks and glass.
That's not true. But I was a bit miffed. What I did was reinstall the ALSA rpm that had been removed, tried the sound in some sort of flailing hope but of course with no joy, shut down the computer, and went to bed.
So I still have to sound on my Fedora Core 4 installation. Apparently Graham Dott "won" though...
I guess my next port of call is, as you suggested Blair, over on the Fedora boards. I'll keep you posted on progress... assuming there is any!

LOL I assume you mean the "match" ... I think that I might have been even more grouchy than usual come 7am if I'd sat it all out. Blimey, at one stage it looked like they were going to have breakfast at the Crucible!
