Site Rankings
While the occasional favourable review can spur surges in visitor traffic, there's no denying the role played by Search Engines in achieving sustained levels of visitor traffic. This is an area in which the PCTechGuide has enjoyed considerable good fortune. A key factor in this was the several excellent listing's the site achieved in 1999 with the Open Directory Project. Many of the major portal sites subsequently based their own web directories on the ODP database, dramatically increasing the site's exposure. By 2001 this had resulted in the site having an excellent ranking position with most of the major Search Engines.
Whilst luck and good timing played an important part in getting things started, I now understand enough about how Search Engine rankings work (click here for more) to know that actually achieving and maintaining a good ranking position has to be earned the hard way. The following table of recent rankings for searches on "PC technology" is therefore a source of considerable pride and proof of what can be achieved without having to spend a penny on any of the many services that claim to guarantee your site a prominent ranking position!
